What is Brutal Noise?
Brutal Noise is a company founded in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1990 and is a unique way to showcase high quality artists using the internet as well as an educational music business resources.
Why should I be showcased with Brutal Noise?
Because you will get listened to. We have an open door policy and accept unsolicited material, something most labels do not do. Because record companies take us seriously and trust that we had a handle on what is quality and what is not, this is a valuable A&R source for the music industry and an opportunity for artists.
What genres of music are accepted?
Absolutely everything gets a listen that is submitted to us although we have a tendency to lean more towards commercial, radio marketable music when selecting artists, essentially formats that record labels will respond well to.
Are certain genres of music preferred?
We are hooked up mostly with CHR (top 40) record labels so we will lean more towards commercial pop, rock and hip-hop. We also have great connections in the club and electronica markets as well. However, we are always looking for the next quirky undeniable project too. If it is marketable and we feel we can get the record companies to respond, we will shop it.
How much does it cost?
There is a submission fee of $10.00 [Learn More]
What kind of A&R attention can I expect if I get featured on Brutal Noise website?
Initially an industry subscribed e-mail goes out to approx 3000 A&R reps during the first of the month. We will also call certain label execs personally if we feels particularly strongly about a project. This can be reps at majors such as Columbia, Dreamworks, Universal and so on as well as a slew of indies. Usually artists can expect anywhere from between 3 to 10 labels responding to their web page after the front page goes up. However, there are no guarantess and more importantly there are certainly no signing guarantees even after a label has requested a submission from us, it typically takes a long time.
Do A&R people really visit this site and if so how regularly?
We are certainly not waiting for A&R reps to just "show up" as we have no way of knowing how many would visit. We do know however, that after we tip them off once a month with new front page artists, many of them do visit as they contact us immediately after.
Does Brutal Noise allow MP3s?
We do allow them but we are honestly not that interested frankly. This site is not so much geared to the general public as it is to artist-industry. We know through experience that labels do not have time to download MP3s which is why they ask for hard submissions. We feel the same.
Do I really need to send a CD for review or can I submit a link so you can download my MP3s?
We get very irritated with e-mails with MP3 links. We simply do not have time to download and we can review a submission much more effectively spinning a CD and looking at a photo.
Will Brutal Noise return my package?
Only if you enclose a stamped self addressed envelope. If you do this we will be happy to.
Is there a backlog of selected artists waiting to get on the Brutal Noise website?
This depends. Usually not. In most circumstances we are short of artists with that something extra special (as are labels!) We receive a great deal of "really good" artists that we are often hesitant to feature. The labels are looking for "incredible" artists so we have to be quite discerning. However, This should not put you off submitting as music is so subjective.
How will my submission be assessed?
Our A&R Department listens to all submissions. They listens for songs, production and star quality.
If I am selected what happens then?
You will get a phone call or an e-mail with details. You will need to have approx 10 packages with CDs/photo ready to submit to labels should they respond.
How is Brutal Noise's fee structured?
The only fee Brutal Noise will take is a $10 submission fee. If a label puts a contract on the table, we will then insist you have your attorney close a deal for you. If you do not have an attorney we can recommend a few first rate ones. Usually Brutal Noise cut is 15% of the deal.
Why on earth should I enclose $10.00 in my submission package?
Because this is how we keep the lights on! It gets expensive promoting artists.
When will Brutal Noise let me know if I have been selected or not?
We contact you if we select you. However, if you are not selected, you will still receive an e-mail from us with a login and password to our Members section, this way you will know that we have reviewed your submission.
Do I have to have original songs?
No but you better have some cool renditions of those covers! Labels want artists, they do not want cabaret singers. You are going to get serious attention if you are a writer/performer so you should weigh up whether you are making a difference singing cover songs.
Can I honestly get discovered through Brutal Noise?
"Getting discovered" is not a phrase any artist should be using anymore. Brutal Noise is another strong avenue you can use to gain good attention in your plight to success. It should be looked upon as part of the whole and not the end in itself.
